Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God By Jonathan Edwards Editors of the recent Jonathan Edwards Reader rightly label Edwards colonial Americas greatest theologian and philosopherthe towering figure of an age in which religion predominated Smith vii There will never be an American literature without Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God It is simply too compelling and all its secrets are yet to be yielded Edwardss sermon is based on the growing simplicity and growing gain for moral concern in America and to encourage his congregation to value their great spiritual ancestors This sermon was the beginning of a movement called The Great Awakening and it also served as a foundation for American Revivalism it was different from the rest Edwards got up to read his manuscript and showed no emotion or tone inflection in its presentation He simply read it to the audience and let the Word speak for itself Edwards used the theorem form of proving a triangle to prove the existence of Hell They were always exposed to destruction as one that stands or walks in slippery places is always supposed to fallsudden unexpected destructionthat they are liable to fall of themselves without being thrown down by the hand of another He argues that one is held above Hell by Gods grace and mercy Edwards was the first to preach a hell and brimstone sermon and his audience was the first to hear such harshness about God yet the idea that God continues to hold you above the pit speaks louder Edwards speech is given n numbers like many of todays preachers the first set includes ideas such as God does not cast men into hell but they allow themselves to go there They deserve to be cast into hell so that divine justice never stands in the way The second set includes the idea of salvations guarantee Edwards asks his congregation What sign is there to assure
