How effective is the Introduction of the Odyssey Homers Odyssey is considered by some to be a near faultless piece of epic poetry With this in mind it would be plausible that the introduction of this epic is also perfect The purpose of this essay is to determine weather this statement is true or false Homer must effectively do three things to give his introduction its full desired effect He must first effectively introduce all main characters to give the audience an idea of their personalities and view points from the outset He must secondly lay the foundations of the plot to help the audience understand and prepare for what is to come Finally the atmosphere of the themes must also effectively be set This is to give the audience an understanding of what is about to happen and why the outcome of a persons actions is what it is Because of these things the first question must be asked are the main characters effectively introduced The first person mentioned to us although not by name is Odysseus He is introduced to us by the invocation of the Muse which in itself adds to the effectiveness of the introduction by basically saying Homer composed this epic with the help of a goddess where Odysseus is praised and almost held in godly respect Odysseus is induced very well into the epic as he is seen as he should be a model ancient Greek hero He is not only the wisest man alive but has been most generous in his offerings to the immortals We also hear of Odysseus greatness from the pineings of his son Telemachus who wishes his legendary father who he has never seen only heard about which makes his fathers greatness more poignant
