Boys and Girls by Alice Munro is a short story that takes aninteresting view at societal and gender restrictions during thenineteen-forties Munro tells the story through a woman looking back ather childhood days as a young girl growing up on a fox farm with herfamily The girl is a tomboy who resists and clashes with her genderrole throughout the piece The experiences and situations that the girlgoes through on the farm help her to shape and change her views ongender Munro use of a cynical tone in describing these experience andsituations hints to the reader the negativity to come with theprotagonists search for her identity and how it relates to her genderThe conflicts she has with her parents herself and the horse Floraall help the protagonist discover what it really means to just be onlya girl at this time in society The young girls parents match the conventional image of charactersfrom the nineteen-forties Her father is a serious fox farmer while hermother is a cheery housewife The stereotypical personality traits ofher mother are what the protagonist is refusing to accept as her ownfate In the beginning of the story the girl describes her fatherswork with much more enthusiasm and importance than her mothers workThe girl greatly prefers working with her father on the farm to workinginside which is somewhat distressing the mother One day whileworking on the farm her father shows her off to a salesman as his newhired hand 573 to which the salesman replies I thought it was onlya girl573 The girl does not take this comment seriously and isstill eager and determined to do the mens work on the farm Theprotagonist at this point is still naive and does not understand thegender boundaries that she is crossing by working with her father Shehowever is starting to realize that is it hard to not conform to genderroles in the society in which she lives in As the story progresses thegirl hears
