A key ingredient to an entertaining piece of literature is having a source of evil develop throughout the text Throughout time the theme of the majority of successful novels involves evil In William Goldings 1954 novel Lord of the Flies Golding demonstrates the transformation from innocence to evil using young boys The transformation from good to evil starts when the boys seek excuses to cover up their foul actions Next evil shows through when the idea and obsession with power begins to corrupt the boys Lastly the reader can see that the boys are turning into true savages when certain boys start becoming sadistic and cause unnecessary harm to others During this novel Golding is trying to prove that human nature is essentially evil The excuses the boys seek to cover up their foul actions demonstrates that human nature is essentially evil To begin Jack decides that he needs to paint himself for hunting as they do in the war While out hunting Jack pulls Roger aside to discuss strategies to kill the pig After Jack paints himself with charcoal He began to dance and his laughter became a blood thirsty snarling Golding 66 The fact that Jack starts to snarl dance and act like a savage after he puts on the mask of paint shows that he has been looking to release some of his inner evil for quite some time Golding is trying to show that because Jack
