Mononucleosis and the Epstein Barr Virus Aim My aim is to investigate the disease mononucleosis Hypothesis Epstein Barr Virus causes mononucleosis mono This virus will make you sick It infects the throat and has symptoms such as tiredness weakness sore throat and cough It affects all age groups and has a big impact on younger and older people This is a virus which is contagious and will only go away on its own Main Points 1 Epstein Barr Virus is a member of the herpes virus family It is one of the more common viruses that infects humans The virus infects the B-lymphocytes and lays dormant until the persons immune system is low Usually there are not any symptoms when a person becomes exposed to the virus but there are symptoms when the person becomes infected Majority of people will be infected with this virus at some time in their life When a teen or young adult becomes infected it is usually in the form of mono 35-50 of the time This virus has been discovered in more then just cases of mono It is associated with Burkitts Lymphoma Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma and non- Hodgkins Lymphoma 2 Some symptoms that you have mono range depending on your age group Symptoms take 4-6 weeks to appear Young children normally dont show great signs but may have a fever loss of appetite and are more tired Fever tiredness and swollen neck glands can occur in adults and older children Mono can also cause you to have a sore throat and sore muscles Also your spleen can enlarge causing you to feel sharp pains in the upper left of your stomach Your liver can also became enlarged Nausea headache stiffness chest pain or difficulty breathing could also indicate symptoms of mono In rare cases heart problems and involvement of the central nervous system are involved Mononucleosis is not fatal 3 There
