In reality was being a slave really as life-changing as many claim Constantly moving from town to town leaving family and friends behind is certainly life-changing The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass enlightens us on just how challenging enduring the trials of slave life can be Douglass delivers numerous heart-wrenching stories of personal persecutions during his time as a slave However many say that Douglass stories were over exaggerated I however despite others opinions believe that Douglass stories are surreal and eye-opening to the reality of slave life that is often times portrayed as insignificant due to white people being in denial of their harsh reactions to African-AmericansThroughout maneuvering constantly from rural to urban slaveholders Douglass paints a clear picture of differences in rural and urban plantations Rural plantations consist of severe punishments discriminating owners and harsh living conditions For example slaveholders eagerly whipped their slaves with heavy cow skin or large hickory sticks countless times for the most bizarre reasons Neither the heart-wrenching shrieks of young women gory gashes of skin nor the pints of overflowing blood could soften the hearts of cruel slaveholders Rural slaveholders were known to portion the amount of food slaves received and the designated time to inhale the inadequate serving of food Rural slaveholders were not concerned with the quality of food they provided for their slaves nor did they particularly care if they received the essential nutrients needed to endure hard labor in the fields all day Healthy or not slaves were required to perform challenging task in the fields gardens or in the treading yard where fanning took place Slaves were also limited to their monthly allowance of food and yearly allowance of clothes on rural plantations Slave owners did not view it as vital importance for slaves needs to be met but rather their work be completed with the utmost caution and approval Urban slave owners were anxious for the opportunity to say that
