The short story of Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingwayis a story that took place back in the 1920s The story is based on aconversation between a man and young women named Jig The young coupleis discussing the polemic issue of abortion Even though the wordabortion is not mentioned it is understood throughout the story Hemingway the author uses two literary elements on the story settingand especially symbolism At the end of the story Jig says There isnothing wrong with me 110 Therefore I strongly believe Jigdecided not to have the abortion The man on the story is called the American he never gets a namethroughout the entire story Throughout the story the American tries toconvince the girl Jig that she should have an abortion and that it isthe best thing for both of them He tries to make himself sound good andinnocent He says to Jig you dont have to do it if you dontwant to55 However as the conversation continues it becomesclear that he is very selfish and that he is just thinking about him Hewants to keep his lifestyle like it was beforeJig is the other main character on the story Her personality is quiteinnocent at the beginning but she changes throughout the story as wellas her language She sounds disoriented especially at the beginningshe does not want to talk about the abortion At some point of thestory she says Would you please please please please please pleaseplease stop talking 99 to the American Therefore I can assume shewas very confused about the decision She gives the impression of beeninnocent but as the conversation with the men continues she starts tosound very sarcastic Jig ends talking at the same level as the menTo know the actual decision Jig took is very hard because Hemingwaydoes not states it However at the end of the story Jig says I feelfine There is nothing wrong with
