Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse takes place in the Oklahoma panhandle during the 1930s The 30s were a time of depression economical and environmental The stock market suffered an immense drop and the farmlands of the Midwest suffered a severe drought Dust piled up over the fields and into the homes of the victims Many families suffered intently One of these was the Kelby family Teenage Billie Jo and her parents live on an Oklahoma farm They find themselves in the middle of the Dust Bowl and are unable to grow a sustainable amount of wheat Things take a turn for the worse when Billie Jos mother is accidently killed by Billie Jo in an incident involving fire Billie Jo is also badly burned on her hands and is unable to participate in her favorite pastime piano Communication is limited between Billie Jo and her father In spite of all the challenges Billie Jo and her father establish a relationship and learn how to grow off of each other in their time of despair Every farmer in the Midwest during the Dust Bowl faced many challenges The Dust Bowl was a character test in itself The farmers were faced with a difficult choice they had to choose to remain hopeful and stay rooted to their land or they could abandon all hope at the first sign of distressAfter the mothers death Billie Jo and her father lost any relationship they ever had They ceased talking and barely made eye contact They both secretly blamed each other for the accident Billie Jo sees her father rotting away with skin cancer and she just decides to leave She heads west and ends up in Arizona When she reaches Arizona she discovers an important truth I tell him about getting out
