During a great storm Calixta is reunited with her past love Alcee as the author explains that it is her birthright that she mysteriously has an affair with him Joseph Rosenblum PhD from the book Master plots II explained how he believes that a theme for this story may be adultery although he goes on and states Chopins characters here do not rebel against the institution of marriage they object to being confined by traditional roles Given the freedom to satisfy their physical or spiritual needs they are content with their spouses Rosenblum Another critic Deborah Kelly Kloepfer from the book Reference Guide to Short Fiction and an author herself of the story The Unspeakable Mother has mentioned that she believes that Chopin seems to follow the same theme in her other short stories as she does with the story The Storm She states that she believes Chopin follows a theme of dissatisfied women trapped in unhappy relationships with a sense of hopelessness an instinctive realization of the futility of rebellion against social and sacred institution She goes on to say that Chopin focuses love and sex to catch and hold the audience KloepferI believe a theme for this story may be finding enjoyment and fulfillment through actions that may be seen as forbidden in society From the moment that Alcee rode up on his horse to her gallery to the moment that they waved farewell Calixta was very intrigued by Alcee as she says His voice and her own startled her as if from a trance As she welcomes him into her house and they sit in the dining room noticing that Calixta bedroom door was open as explained with its white monumental bed its closed shutters looked dim and mysterious which leads to a Calixta and Alcee having sex that is very liberating and enjoyable and are very at home with each other Further into the story it says the generous abundance
