It has been said that On Liberty has been one of the most influential books of American history The idea of personal liberty was not a new one when Mill wrote his famous book but it was best written Mills expression of his philosophy is still as influential in todays society A fairly short book that is quick and easy to read I found this book to express Mills passion towards philosophy Mill only provides a few of the many issues raised by his ideas of liberty there are many arguments and counter-arguments that can be made on the subject Still On Liberty has never really been over taken by any other book on the subject of liberty John Stuart Mill was an odd brilliant man and one of the great thinkers of his age Mills was stuffed with knowledge by his father at an early age and was not sent to school or church He hardly interacted with others of his age in his youth Pure knowledge was meant to shape him and it did very well On Liberty has five chapters The first is Introductory where Mill explains what exactly is under discussion It is Civil or Social Liberty the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual Mill recognizes it as the vital question of the future Civil liberty was not a widespread thing for much of history and Mill acknowledges that Despotism is a legitimate mode of government in dealing with barbarians provided the end be their improvement Mills also says Over himself over his own body and mind the individual is sovereign It sounds convincing but the issue isnt quite so simple In explaining his belief Mill adds an important warning The only freedom which deserves the
