Most people wouldnt think about how interesting a simple photograph is and where it comes from After reading Susan Sontag article Regarding the Pain of Others it discusses what photography is and the meaning of photographs A photo involving a West African little boy holding a riffle gun that is twice his size is shocking Susan Sontag states For photographs to accuse and possibly to alter conduct they must shock Sontag 373 Which meant that a photograph has to shock in order to really make an impression on people A shock photograph would have to be one that is unusual This photo is strange because its not likely to see a child holding a gun and possibly knowing how to use judging by his facial expression Susan Sontag also says Among such archive of horror the photographs of genocide have undergone the greatest institutional development Sontag 376 This statement means that genocide is becoming a big deal in the world today This photo suggest this child has possibly participated in a genocide possibly lives in poverty and he isnt suffering Before reading the background on this picture and knowing where it came from it atomically raises questioning in a persons head like why does this child look so mean and why is he holding this gun After examining the photo is shows that the little boys surrounding arent the best it looks as though he is in the woods because he is posing by a tree This photo is more of a portrait but behind him you can tell that it is a wooded area even though it is blurred The boy probably lives in poverty because of the way he is dressed in a ripped dirty shirt and homemade necklace since it is from the waist up This picture was taken in Uganda by an unknown source but it looks as though the boy is poising for this picture because of the
