The poem Canonization by John Dunne is about a man stripping away from society opinions and the society itself The word canonization means conferral of sainthood I think that the whole poem signifies achieving a different level I think that theses two lovers achieve Divine Human Love The speaker is saying Shut up read this try to understand it and then beg your divine power so that one day you can achieve it In the first line of the poem when it says For God sake hold your tongue and let me love I think that this line displays a lot of anger toward society for judging him He is saying at this point dont speak just follow me where I will take you In the lines where he says With Wealth your state your mind with arts improve Take your course get you a place Observe His Honor or His Grace Hes saying you have your place in life where you feel is fit You will worship whoever the divine is to you but dont look down on me because the way I choose to love In the second stanza he is really trying to express that nothing they do effects anyone but him and his lover Everything in society that is bad is still there the wars plagues etc When he asks Alas alas whos injured by my love There is a sense of hurt in him and it makes you feel sympathetic toward him In the third stanza is where they achieve this Divine love When he says And we in us find the eagle and the dove The phoenix riddle wrath more wit by us We two being one are it I think that is a very powerful line He is referring to them as these creatures a eagle a masculine figure that is strong and then the dove a feminine figure that is pure and represents
