Life will not always be fair nor will it be easy Life will not be a crystal stair as Langston Hughes puts it in Mother to Son Through his careful tone diction and imagery Hughes motivates his readers to never falter in the face of lifes challenges Mother to Son is told through first person The speaker of the poem is a mother she is speaking to her son The son could be Langston Hughes but does not need to be The mother is telling her son that her life hasnt been no crystal stair2 The mother goes on to say that her stair case of life has had many challenges and obstacles but throughout all the adversity she has been through she has never stopped She tells her son that he should not quit Cause you finds its kinder hard The mother is telling her son to be strong because if she hasnt stopped climbing throughout the challenges life has thrown her neither should he Hughes uses a serious tone throughout Mother to Son The mother explains to her son that life for is going to be a struggle Life is going to have tacks in it And splinters And boards torn up And places with no carpet on the floor 3-6 The tone of the mother is very serious when it comes to her and her son overcoming these obstacles She wants him to keep climbing and keep pushing forward For Ise still goin honey Ise still climbin 18-19 This means if she can overcome everything that she has been through Then her son shouldnt stop and quit because life is hard To motivate the readers Hughes carefully uses diction to portray a mother who has a very hard life but somehow keeps pushing forward He paints a picture of the mothers life as being a stair case with tacks and splinters in
