The portrayal of Jesus in the Gospel according to Matthew and the Gospel according to Mark differs in many ways but one of the more important is his different teaching approach What makes his approach to teaching different in the two Gospels is that in Matthews Gospel Jesus is far more direct in his teachings where as in Marks Gospel he is extremely vague This difference is shown through accounts of his actual sayings and teachings of his message and by his disciples better understanding of that message While Matthews Gospel follows the same basic story and timeline and most likely used the Gospel according to Mark as a reference Matthew chose to include passages that Mark either did not have knowledge of or chose to omit One of these sections that are not included in the Gospel according to Mark is the passages of Matthew 5 through Matthew 7 These passages such as Mt 58 spell out Jesus teachings message and how to reach the kingdom of heaven in a more direct and common way than in the Gospel of Mark The inclusion of these passages also make the parables such as The Parable of the Mustard Seed Mt 1331-32 Mk 430-32 easier for the reader to decipher Not only does Matthew make Jesus a better teacher in his Gospel by making it easier for the reader to understand his teachings with the inclusion of new passages but he also shows Jesus disciples as having a more in-depth understanding of his teachings This better understanding of Jesus is shown in the way his disciples react differently to situations in the two Gospels One of these situations is when they are on the boat and Jesus calms the approaching storm Mt 823-27 Mk 435-41 In Mark his disciples are frightened and ask him why does not care that they will die while in Matthew it is obvious that they have a better understanding and belief
