Like most of the countries in the world Iran is a society where women were oppressed and left behind The oppression was due to so many reasons mainly because of the injustice and inequality that the Muslim society created among people In Persepolis the author brings out the image of women in the Iranian society and what they represented This essay will focus on how different women such as Marji her mother grand-mother school-teacher Guardians of Revolutionetc are portrayed by establishing a comparison and contrast between them We will have a look at the gender issued brought out throught the book and challenges that women face Furthermore I will establish the correspondence between Irans politics and its gender norms and relations as well as a comparison between the Iranian culture expectations of gender with the western expectations Marjiher mother and grand- mother are united and agree on most of the things such as their attitude towards revolution and all the changes that it brought This can be seen by the way they all participate in the demonstrations against revolution and they way they rebel themselves against the government by doing forbidden things such as drinking alcohol and throwing partiesMarjis mother and grand-grand-mother are very affectionate towards Marji and play a big role in her education by making sure she behaves the right way and by helping Marji to become the woman that they want her to be For instance Marjis mother stops her from punishing Ramin whose father was a murderer and instead teaches her to forgive and to never judge anyone Likewise Marjis grand-mother also cares and advices Marji before she leaves for Vienna by telling her always keep your dignity and be true to yourself This helped Marji to overcome so many obstacles in life and always remembered this whenever she was tempted to do something wrong Unlike Marji her mother and grand-mother the school-teachers and Guardians are fundamentalists women who are
