Reaction to The Dead The Dead is the last story in the book entitled Dubliners by James Joyce This story seems to unite Dubliners developing in great depth many themes present in the other stories particularly entrapment escape and paralysis James Joyce uses and develops these themes mainly through the recurring images of death and cold that end the story in the final epiphany John Huston Director of the movie The Dead has also portrayed entrapment escape and paralysis into his story line as well as images of the present and the past and a feeling of nostalgia Although one would think that a director could follow the book exactly John Huston has proven that the book just isnt as exciting as a movie could be John Huston instead uses images of nationality and religion into the movie to give his audience an idea of what the characters think and feel John Huston uses images very vividly throughout his version of the movie The Dead One of these arrays of images is when Mrs Morkan sings and Aunt Julia plays Arrayed for the Bride for the guests The images John Huston uses are ones of the past and present images that give viewers a feeling of nostalgia Some of the things that were shown to viewers included a bible with a rosary and old photographs of people and places James Joyce is unable to use a series pictures to tell his story so instead he needs to find vivid wording to get across the feelings death and liveliness The initial physical description of the very senile Julia is that her hairwas gray and gray also with darker shadows was her large flaccid face 157 She added little to the conversations but she does exhibit her exuberance when she sings with all her youthful vigor hailed as her best performance yet as Mr Bowne exclaims Miss Julia Morkan my latest discovery157
