With my family and friends our trailers and trucks loaded up with our various OHVs off highway vehicles I travel four hours East on Highway 50 into Nevada to get away from societies boundaries as we have been doing together for years A natural wonder that provides acres of sand dunes surrounded by desert and salt flats is where we intend to go In the middle of these dunes stands a magnificent 880 foot tall mountain of sand responsible for the naming of this site The Sand Mountain Recreation Area is a marvelous well-managed place with an amazing history where I can enjoy my vacations in numerous ways Sand Mountain Recreation Area is about twenty miles out of Fallon Nevada in the high desert It is located near the Fallon Naval Air Station which is at an elevation of 3965 feet Jets are occasionally flying over so there is no maximum decibel level That means that there is no limit to how loud you can be which is rare at places like this Sand Mountain can be seen from the Highway before reaching the Sand Mountain road Turning left onto that road seeing the mountain grow larger as we get closer gives me the shallow feeling I get in my throat whenever excited with anticipation At the end of the three mile strait dirt road sits the camping area at the base of the mountain The site does not have designated individual camping space but rather random fire pits made of holes dug in the sand surrounded by a circle of rocks to park by Ahead towers the wall of gold called Sand Mountain with the face and tallest crest directly forward To the left is the steep slope of the end of the mountain that blends into the more level sand trails ending where the salt flats begin These flats extend into the horizon To the left the majority of the lengthy mountain bends
