The Scientific Revolution questioned and ultimately challenged conceptions and beliefs about nature and the external world and reality that had established into a rather strict awareness by the late middle ages Derived from the works of ancient Greeks and Romans and grounded in Christian thought the medieval worldview had become a formidable one This was a universe in which the earth was the center of everything otherwise known as the Ptolemaic-Aristotelian worldview However the scientific revolution brought Europeans a new way of viewing the universe and their place in it The shift from an earth-centered to a sun-centered cosmos had an enormous emotional as well as an intellectual effect upon those who understood it Yet what drove these educated Europeans to assert that the earth was in fact at the center of the universe in the first place To illustrate this matter three societies will be considered classical Greek Roman and Christian for all of these denominations were interested in assessing this theory Of course each had their individual reasons whether political social or spiritual for wanting to investigate the physical makeup of the universe However the common reason was not to prove that their traditional beliefs of the universe were wrong but in fact to prove that their beliefs had truth to them For if they could determine that the earth was the center of the universe or not they had nothing to lose and only to gain The greatest achievements in the Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries came in those fields most dominated by the ideas of the Greeks - astronomy mechanics and medicine The cosmological views of the later middle ages had been built upon a synthesis of the ideas of Aristotle Claudius Ptolemy and several others Their prior beliefs to the universe in correlation with the earth was that they were in fact in existence according to the grace of their deities above them on Mount
