3 At the start of the story the narrator creates an exciting and peaceful mood Then all of sudden the mood changes to horrifying mood at the end of the story The purpose of this is to make the readers meet an unexpected ending Otherwise the story will be too plain and boring Jackson seems to make a social comment about a specific traditional ritual which should stop because it is considered as unnecessarily right thing to do This is the main theme of the story In this story the villagers dont even know the necessity and origin of the tradition fully In real life some people too do not even know the purpose of some traditions In the result of this the majority of people can interpret the understanding of the tradition wrongly and the tradition can be changed completely different - It may become immortal from a social point of view He also makes comment on our different views towards traditions In The Lottery young people start to realize that the tradition is immortal but Old Man Warner thinks the lottery is essential to have a successful harvest 4 Before the lottery starts Tessie is so excited that she dont like to miss it but after Hutchinsons got the winner paper she starts to think that the ritual is not good saying that it wasnt fair She cannot accept the situation that is given and is an irresolute woman She changes her mind when the things turn out not as she wanted Old Man Warner thinks that the lottery is essential to be kept as a tradition and it would be a foolish thing to do if the tradition is stopped He went through the tradition for a long time so his mind is unshakeable He just accepts the ritual as a natural thing Other villages are quitting the lotteries because they may have realized that the lottery is not right
