Huckleberry Finn His struggle against racism Racism is ones ignorance towards anothers beliefs religion color etc In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain the main character Huckleberry Finn is a very sheltered and uneducated boy He comes from a family of low class who is very racist and in turn makes him also Huck shows the characteristics of a racist many times during the novel and does this without even realizing how harmful it is because it comes naturally At this time blacks were still slaves and treated as pieces of property Property Many People felt that property didnt need to be respected so neither did the black people In one incident Huck actually feels compassion towards the black slave named Jim He promises Jim that he will not tell anyone about Jims escaping from Miss Watsons house Huck then continues to say Well I did I said I wouldnt and Ill stick to it Honest injun I will People would call me a low down Abolitionist and despise me for keeping mumbut that dont make no difference43 He actually sympathizes with the black man and starts to enjoy his company I think he feels bad for the way he treats Jim No matter how much he feels like being racist he knows deep down inside that it isnt right for society to treat black people like they do Besides the fact that Huck doesnt want to be alone on his journey he believes everyone should have a fair chance at freedom Huck shows his racism when he says I never see such a nigger If he got an a notion in his head once there warnt no getting it out again78 This is a racist comment because he is degrading the black population The N word alone shows a racist tone It is the same as Smith 2 calling a white
