Harrison Bergeron We hear of people who talk of A perfect world a world where there is no hatred a world where war no longer exists a world with absolute equality where no one is better or less than you But can this world this perfect world function efficiently and or effectively How would life or more importantly how would the human species adapt in this perfect world Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut is a story that portrays numerous facets of human psychology linked with themes that portray a bleak future for the human species Among these themes is the knowledge of ones history and the stunning effect one individual can produce through ones vision of the truth In turn it is these sub-themes that lay the groundwork for Vonneguts central theme the importance of individuality The government in this futuristic world of 2081 manipulates human intelligence to the point where all persons are required to wear bands that rest on their templates These bands electronically modify intelligence effectively increasing or decreasing natural IQs to the point where everyone is average Obviously these new ideas have no basis in reality While equality must be Whitlow striven for in many aspects it is the differences in people that make the backbone of modern society In order to be effective in modern society one must have knowledge of history in order to make important decisions based on hisher beliefs Indeed there is a resemblance of the story and several periods in history Dictatorships worked and still work this way An example would be the communist system in eastern-European countries eg the Czech Republic which was fortunately overthrown in the late1980s People were discouraged from forming their own opinions Children were brainwashed sort of speak in schools to be all uniform in mind and opinion People were then more easily manipulated which was the goal of the communist party This is how life
