Illusions Illusion is often a recurring theme in literature In ones life illusion is used to escape from the harsh circumstances of reality Many people have expectations and dreams We use these to encourage and help us get through the difficulties of the real world In the play The Glass Menagerie the author Tennessee Williams gives each of the characters hope and illusions to aid them in dealing with the conflicts they are facing in their lives Amanda Wingfield the mother of Laura and Tom has many illusions Amanda is a women who frantically clings to another time and place She often recalled her days in Blue Mountain when her life was perfect and once had seventeen gentlemen callers in one day Her husband was a telephone man who fell in love with long distances and never came home He left his responsibility of supporting the family up to Tom In the Wingfeild home there is a blown up photo of Mr Wingfield hanging on the wall in the living room Amanda pretends she has a normal family The illusion of Amandas perfect life assists her in escaping her disappointing family Amanda having failed to establish contact with reality continues to live vitally in her illusions but Lauras situation is even worse A childhood illness has left her crippled one leg slightly shorter than the other and held in a brace This problem adds to her inferiority complex Laura is extremely shy and has no interest in getting involved in a relationship with a man Although her mother thinks that Laura is going to have as many gentlemen callers as she did in Blue Mountain Tom is trapped in a situation where he has to stay home to support his family He cant leave and hes not able to persue his dreams of joining the Merchant Marines The Merchant Marines is Toms way of breaking free from his family
