The review I chose for the performance before 1980 is from TimeMagazine The production took place on October 10th 1977 at ManhattansCircle in the Square Theatre The review is written by T E Kalem He starts his review by giving a brief history of Moliere theauthor of the play whom he calls the master of the genre from over threecenturies ago Kalem writes that the characters he creates take on everyaspect and emotion that can be paired with comedy Kalem then comparestragedies to comedies He states that tragedies end in death and comediesend in self-knowledge Both are something that can lead to great heartbreakor great success In Tartuffe Orgon is blinded by the religious facadethat Tartuffe throws in his face that he almost ruins his entire lifeOrgon lets Tartuffe into his home and watches while Tartuffe creates chaoswith every single person He asks Tartuffe to marry his daughter hedisowns his own son and gives up all of his possessions that he has workedso hard to get Orgon is caught up in the complete absurdity that Tartuffeis acting with the head of the household cannot see that everyone in hisfamily is trying to lead him in the right direction The play also shows adisheveled image of the Christian faith the notion that if one gives upall their worldly goods they will in turn be closer to God and heaven Theperson who portrays this image is the evil Tartuffe He uses Orgons lovefor his faith to gain access to his wealth Kalem gives detailed descriptions of the main characters of theproduction The details he wrote helped the audience understand and immersethemselves fully in the characters The actor John Wood who playsTartuffe gives off plenty of signs of his other identity a few strayhairs surround his face enhancing his sinister features his slender bonybody walking around stage like
