A Question of Ethics The use of an honor system in almost any situation causes much dispute based on the both positive and negative affects that it may impose upon the individuals who utilize it The honor system exists on two varying levels that of the individual and of the social The individual conundrum that often imposes itself is one of the concepts of right and wrong The social aspect places the individual against the group and often the establishment An honor system could only work if its users were to clearly delineate its limitations and avow its importance The individuals ability to value and benefit from the use of the honor system is based solely on his or her values If the individual is willing to be totally and utterly honest and follow the established contract the system will work Whereas if the persons intent is not one of high moral character the system will not have the ability to be utilized Each person must make a decision based on his or her situation and background as to what the right choice is It may be to inform the teacher if a student had cheated on his last exam or to partake in amoral behavior himself The individual struggle often extends itself to affect the masses The interactions that occur between several individuals within the honor system can have two affects The group can decide to abide by and follow the set rules They can also decide to take advantage of the situation and other people This decision can force others to make immoral decisions even if they know they are being dishonest The honor system in my personal opinion can succeed in almost any situation But it is the degree of freedom allowed within the honor system that will cause it to fail or succeed In our school this may be to a certain extent successful if
