Rosa Parks The Woman Who Changed a Nation Our mistreatment was just not right and I was tired of it states the very tired young woman named Rosa Parks who was jailed for standing up for her rights On February 41913 a black girl named Rosa Louise McCauly was born She had a little brother named Sylvester and her parents Leona and James who both worked very hard for everything they had Rosa grew up on a farm with her grandparents who owned their land and raised animals on it She frequently went fishing crabbing and hunting with them regularly When she was in her 20s she met and married her husband Raymond Parks and later became a tailor in the city When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man forty years ago on December 11955 she was tired and weary from a hard day of work She was physically tired but no more than you or I after a long days work In fact I believe that under other circumstances she would have probably given up her seat willingly to a child or elderly person But this time Parks was tired of the treatment she and other African Americans received every day of their lives which was racism segregation and the Jim Crow Laws of that time After being in jail for a couple of hours her husband came to bail her out She was fined fourteen dollars but she didnt pay the money because she didnt feel she had broken the law Many black people heard about Rosa being arrested and were angry They thought segregation rules were wrong So everyone thought black people should not ride the buses and start a boycott Her arrest and trial a 381-day Montgomery bus boycott and her leadership teamed with MLK Jr proved her to be a very historical
