The man who wrote this article was Thom Garfat He proceeded to talk about how he was a child care worker and at the time he was working in a residential treatment center in Quebec and had just come from teaching child care and family work Much of his past experience has been working with families Thom had the chance to be the director of the residential center and was looking forward to integrating family work and residential care Everyone that Thom told this about would wish him luck and not to get his hopes too high because of the fact that the two programs dont work well together And when he experienced he found out that they were all right Now times have changed and he is aware that there are numerous places where these previously competitive approaches have been integrated into a fuller approach to helping young people and their families Some residential programs refer to a family as a client and others where families and residential facilities work cooperatively for the benefit of the young people and family and are still others where residential programs are defined as a support to family work and is done by child and youth care staff Training in family work is now an essential part of basic staff development where they spend part of their time in the facility and part of their time in the family homes In many cases residential staff no longer work in isolation from the family no longer blame the parents for the situation and no longer compete with the family work being done Over the years that Thom has been working he has learned many things that helped him with this transition such as These are not our children hes found that people have gotten too attached to the children The residential facility is not home Their home is at home if you make the
