Thomas Jefferson On the Dangers of Reading Fiction In todays world there are a variety of fiction books that people choose to read Some of these books contain useful information while the rest are just read for pure entertainment I agree with Jeffersons statement Nothing can engage attention unless dressed in all the figments of fancy and nothing so bedecked comes amiss Which means that unless a book has some type of excitement such as suspense or romance the average person would not consider reading the book Many people would prefer to read about a fiction persons life rather then a book on how to improve their own life This indicates that this particular person has more interest in a fiction book rather then reality Jefferson states the result is a bloated imagination sickly judgment and disgust towards all the real businesses if life My opinion is fiction becomes an excuse for people to escape from their own lives When they are reading it is like they are in their own little world and nothing else matters around them For example when someone reads a romance novel they become so engrossed that it is hard for them to separate fiction from reality They may have fantasies on how they would want a relationship with the opposite sex to be But what they dont realize is that a relationship in todays world will never be like it is in the books Everyone would love to have a fairy tale relationship where everything is perfect Those who dont read romance novels or any other kind of fiction books know that nothing is perfect In conclusion Jefferson states A great obstacle to good education is the inordinate passion prevalent for novels and the time lost in that reading which should be instructively employed Meaning that for those to get more out of an education their time shouldnt be wasted on reading books that are not
