Every American is considered innocent until proven guilty Every American has the right to a fair trial Why is it that these basic American rights seem to be fading with time Does the jury system work To Kill A Mockingbird reveals the faults in the jury system Likewise the trial of OJ Simpson demonstrated how the jury system fails to function fairly In To Kill A Mockingbird the jury in the Tom Robinson trial was extremely biased Tom Robinson was not considered innocent until proven guilty Tom was considered guilty until proven guilty If somebody in the jury did believe that Tom Robinson was not guilty he would probably have not brought it up anyway The OJ Simpson trial was a little bit different OJ Simpson was definitely guilty The jury determined otherwise All of the proof was there I have no explanation for why the jury decided that OJ was innocent It would be extremely hard to say if the jury system works or not The jury system can work If there is at least one fair unbiased person on the jury it could work like in 12 Angry Men 12 Angry Men expresses how the jury system can work In it a lot of people do not want to be there and are hurrying to leave One character gets the group talking and eventually switches everyones vote from the original guilty to a vote of not guilty All that it takes for the jury system to work is for there to be at least one person who cares about what he or she is doing It takes one person who can get everyone else talking and defending his or her side of the argument With this one person the jury system can work All it takes is one willing person
