To Speed or not to speed Just about every person who drives has speeded at least one time in his or her life Speeding is just a part of driving but it does not necessarily have to be The only reason why a lot of people speed is because the speed limit is far too low The speed limit should be raised because it was lower for the wrong reasons speeders will speed no matter what and raising the speed limit would improve highway safety In the 1970s there was an energy crisis in The United States This energy crisis raised gasoline prices dramatically As a direct result a fifty-five mile per hour speed limit was mandated for all roads The speed limit was changed to save money not lives According to the National Coalition for the Abolition of Speed Limits web page speed limits are set purposely low to generate state revenue It is also true that if the speed limit was raised auto insurance companies would stand to loose a lot If the speed limit was raised it means less offenders which means the auto insurance companies can not raise their rates as much Is it possible that the government was looking out for their pocket books rather then our safety In any case the previous reasons why the speed limits were lower were not good ones The speed limit was lower for money and later the old saying speed kills was added to make them look responsible Speeders are going to speed until the speed limit is raised to a reasonable limit There are not just a few speeders one the highways there is tons of them Every time a driver goes on a highway where there is a 55 miles per hour speed limit it is almost certain that heshe will see at least on person driving 56 miles per hour or more Speeders have to worry about
