From the beginning of the US there have been two major parties One party typically ranked economic growth and law and order among its highest priorities currently known as Republican The other party typically had the goal of an egalitarian society in the economic and social spheres currently known as Democrat These two competing strands of thought have a long history of political struggle in the US The shifts in issues down through the years are interesting At the beginning of the country the two parties where the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans The Federalists were akin to the modern day Republicans but their ideology contained many elements of what today would be part of the Democratic party platform The general ideas held by the Federalist party still holds today in our modern Republican party Both groups were generally made up of the wealthy group of society They are both large advocates for aiding the wealthy The modern Republican party supports equal tax cuts across the board while most people support that the wealthy should have to pay more in taxes every year Both parties are open supporters of big business since most of their members are in big business This can be seen all too well in the political agendas of these parties past and present In the Federalist era Hamilton a main Federalist leader worked to pass his financial aid plan that would largely benefit big business Even in their similar party makeup and emphasis on the wealthy many differences have come between the two groups Many of the ideals held by the Federalist party have went to the wayside to support new ideas of the Republican party One of the largest of these changes is the strength of the government The Federalists support a strong central government They believed a governing by an elite group would make this country more successful Today the Republican party believes that government should be
