John GonzalezProfessor AltschulerWriting 201April 24 2013Gothic Elements in A Rose for EmilyGothic elements are often used to set a particular atmosphere and to lead readers to an eerie state of mind They stand as an essential part of writings because of the influential affects they possess on the reader In fact Author William Faulkner uses a wide array of gothic elements in his story A Rose for Emily to create the plot and to facilitate in the establishment of the stories atmosphere Faulkners use of gothic elements in the story served to foreshadow the mysteries events that were soon to take place With that being said he was able to successfully forward the plot and with that readers were able to detect the uncanny atmosphere of the story Therefore Faulkner used gothic elements in the forms of objects and events throughout the story to build the plot and to establish the atmosphere that created suspense among the readingAmong the many gothic elements throughout A rose for Emily was the character of Miss Emily Figerson herself In Emilys early days she was wealthy young woman living carefree with her father The family held an elite social status in town for many years living a very comfortable life But upon an unfortunate series of events Emilys life began to spiral out of control after the death of her beloved father As a result the transformation of Emily becoming a gothic element had begun Readers are able to identify Emily as one of the gothic elements through the authors descriptions of her Faulkner exclaims She looked bloated like a body long submerged in motionless water and of that pallid hue Her eyes lost in the fatty ridges of her face looked like two small pieces of coal pressed into a lump of dough here Faulkner is painting a vivid picture of Emilys appearance becoming progressively worse In doing so he is using Emilys appearance to set the atmosphere
