In the play Mid Summer Nights Dream Shakespeare uses dreams toillustrate imagination and the contrasting worlds of fantasy andreality The play is structured around the concept of it all being adream By keeping the characters in a state of dreams it confuses theaudience while demonstrating pure imagination Dreams are an important aspect in this play not only by demonstratingtrue imagination but they foreshadow events and show the truepersonality of many of the characters The dreams are seen as truer thanreality because they illustrate imagination After Bottom wakes up hebelieves his whole encounter with Titania was merely just a dreamBottoms speech illustrates his true character with the humorous linesthat display his confidence I have had a most rare vision I have hada dream past the wit of man to say what dream it was Man is but an assif he go about to expound this dream Methought I was - there is no mancan tell what Methought I was and methought I had - But man is but apatched fool if he will offer to say what methought I had The eye ofman hath not heard the ear of man hath not seen mans hand is not ableto taste his tongue to conceive nor his heart to report what my dreamwas I will get Peter Quince to write a ballet of this dream It shallbe called Bottoms Dream because it hath no bottomIVI203-214 He begins his speech by declaring that no one iseducated enough to understand his dream displaying his over confidenceHe then contradicts himself and wants to ask Quince to write a playabout his dream It is paradoxical because the audience knows that it infact did happen and was not a dream The speech is comical because whenhe describes his dream he mixes up body parts and their sense The dreamillustrates imagination because it describes the majestical world in acreative way It also shows how Bottom provides comic relief and keepsthe audience engaged In another
