In Winslow Homers Boys in a Pasture one of his oil paintingsthat he painted in 1874 People who saw these paintings called them theBarefoot Boys This image depicts young county boys of the timecarefree and enjoying their childhood Homer may have painted this workfor many reasons These two country boys seem to have a sense ofinnocence as if he was taken back to his own childhood This painingcan be viewed in the Museum of Fine Arts in BostonOne of the reasons I choose this is because I grew up on a farm and hadto go up and get cows in the pasture My cousins and I would go up inthe pasture everyday during the summer months to get the cows on ourfamily farm I can remember all the times when the day stretched asfar as you could see and when our only responsibility was only toourselves We would play on the grassy hills in the pastures for hourson end It is like we could have been there with the boys in thepasture Planning out our next adventure Homer paints near to the ground giving us the viewer the vantagepoint a sense of horizon and that gives the pasture an enhanced senseof freedom of which the boys are taking advantage The triangle formedby the boys that echos the appearance of the straw hat and it points tothe path of the two boys gaze which is to a horizon so distant that itlies past the rim of the world That these two boys are dreaming oftheir next adventure Like they are trying to decide if they want toraid framer Johns strawberry patch or something along that Homer uses earth tones to describe that the boys are out side He alsopaints the sky different shades of blue from light sky blue to sky bluewith a whisper of white clouds He also paints a fence in the backgroundwhich to show that the boys are in a field
