A few words a smile a nod of understanding Thats all it takes to show students we care to inspireto change some students writing lives Anderson 2000 Three months ago I would have said this statement was a nice sentiment full of warm fuzzy fluff but not practical for a real world classroom However after my time in practicum I see Andersons words are those of an experienced educator and not the spouting of emotional opinions Simple acts when done sincerely and with purpose can make a difference in our students His unpretentious question Hows it going Anderson 2000 is a great example of a humble act opening up windows of opportunity I said this to students hundreds of times during my placement and was continually amazed at how they immediately responded and invited me into their work The students wanted someone to be interested in their writing and were eager for assistance in making it better More often than not all I had to do was make a sincere conscience effort to teach them how to improve their writing and like little sponges they soaked in the attention assistance and suggestions and enthusiastically applied their new skills to their work What they did not realize is that by allowing me to teach them they were teaching me so much more Most of my Tuesdays and Thursdays for the past three months I spent in a 5th grade English Language Arts classroom at Oglethorpe County Elementary School The day is broken up into four blocks one extra learning period lasting for forty-five minutes one block lasting eighty minutes and two blocks of ninety minutes The extra learning period varies in numbers from fourteen to eighteen and focuses on practice in math reading and writing The three additional blocks range in class sizes from twenty-six to twenty-nine students With the exception of the extra learners group all the
