The Use of Marijuana for Medical Purposes Marijuana is illegal in fifty states because of its classification as an illicit drug but controversial issues have been established that this illicit drug has improved the course of treatment for suffering patients in such illnesses as Glaucoma Anorexia and Cancer Though studies show that it is proven to help relive pain of these particular illnesses it also has its downfalls Marijuana is harsh to the lungs because in order for its effect to work it must be inhaled In the book Cannabis in Medical Practice by Mary Lynn Marthre ED exhibits how medicine uses of marijuana can help life threatening illnesses to help relieve pain In the article Medicine or Not Pot still Called Risky by Carl T Hall on the other hand describes how even though it helps relieve the pain of major illnesses it also is harmful to the lungs and brain and is not safe In Marthres book her rhetorical criteria depends on appeal of scientific authority as well as vivid imagery Halls artic le however focuses on sarcastic tone and as well as scientific authority In the book Cannabis in Medical Practice the author exemplifies scientific authority by describing the research that was done to show that marijuana can be used for medical practice For example the author states the two effects of cannabis that have been demonstrated of therapeutic value are as an antiemetic and as an appetite stimulant in AIDS patients manifesting anorexiaPetro 59 This shows studies that give a risk-benefit and help the patient gain appetite control The author is showing studies through scientific value and is letting the audience know what facts they know to prove that marijuana is effected In addition vivid imagery is evident through out the book by patients personal experiences For example one patients experience of glaucoma proclaims Someone gave me two marijuana cigarettes I smoked one of the cigarettes i was given and
