Aim The aim of the assignment is to purify water to a level in which is safe to drink There are many different ways to purify water I will be using a method that was used to purify water more than fifty years ago It is rarely used now as well as then but I will test it out and see how it works Materials 5 buckets Clean gravel Clean sand Filter paper Chlorine Strainer Procedure The way which I have chosen to purify the water takes many steps Step 1 Settling This is when the large particles in the water are allowed to settle to the bottom Step 2 Filtration This step has two other steps within it i First the water has to be filtered through gravel to pickup all the larger particles which did not settle ii Next it has to be filtered through sand to pick up any particles which were too small to be picked up by the gravel Step 3 The last step in purifying the water is to add a powerful disinfectant like chlorine to the water to kill remaining germs or bacteria Hypothesis My hypothesis is that most of the particles will settle during the settling process Leaving hardly anything to be caught by the gravel The sand will be play a large part in the purifying of the water taking all the little bits out of the water that are barely visible and too light to sink Finally the Chlorine will be added to kill all the germs and bacteria which would make it hazardous to drink Results My results were as expected in step 1
