Visiting a Gallery This past weekend we took a trip to the Memorial Art Museum inRochester to see some of the art work on display there There were manydifferent exhibits ranging from Ancient Egyptian art to African masksto the Impressionists right up to pop art and many more modern pieces The Rochester - Finger Lakes exhibit was there the week we visited andone of the most interesting paintings was part of this exhibit As American As by Christine Henehan was painted originally in1994 and was first shown at an art show right here at RIT I saw thispainting for the first time in the NTID Art Gallery on a weekend whenthey were hosting a show My initial attraction to this painting wasvery strong due to the subtle violence involved in the subject Thepainting is of a table in what appears to be a normal looking house Thetable has an American flag draped over it and on this is a slice ofapple pie on a plate and next to that a handgun Considering only whatI had seen at this point made the painting of a very strong subjectmatter The author was inferring that disregard for the country andcrime was as American as apple pie This really made me stop and thinkabout the subject for a while The painting was nothing more thansymbolic the style and brushstrokes were nothing worth mention Thepainting just really came out and grabbed you and forced you to see itus the author s way I saw As American As again this past weekend when we went to theMemorial Art Gallery Again it struck me and grabbed my attention butI did not really recognize it at first I looked at the piece andrealized that the canvas was ripped and torn around the inside of theframe Next to the painting was a full description of what had happened Apparently the painting was stolen
