Section 1 Introduction More than a third of men and women in the United Kingdom die from coronary heart disease or stroke One in twelve men die from coronary heart disease before the age of 65 Yet this epidemic of premature death is reversible indeed the death rate is already falling Lawrence et al 1996 Cardiovascular disease still remains the greatest cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK despite the advancements medical technology has made in the prediction prevention and treatment of the disease Jowett and Thompson 1995 claim that in the UK there is a death due to CHD in a person under the age of 65 every 16 minutes Claims are also made by Jowett and Thompson 1995 that 25 of the total NHS expenditure is on CHD events and that approximately 30 of acute medical cases within hospital beds are occupied by patients with CHD The role of CHD care is a large burden to the NHS and tax payers in the country and although incidence rates are falling CHD is still a large health problem A Green Paper Our Healthier Nation released by the British Governments Department of Health in 1998 sets out the departments aims concerted action by the Government as a whole in partnership with local organisations to improve peoples living conditions and health Department of Health 1998 Within this Green Paper are the departments targets for reducing death by heart disease We therefore propose to set a target to reduce the death rate from heart disease and stroke related illnesses amongst people under 65 by at least a further third 33 by 2010 from a baseline at 1996 Department of Health 1998 The past 10 - 15 years has witnessed considerable medical advances in CHD This includes the prediction prevention and management of the disease Many of these advancements have been from the application of the findings and results from large
