TitleWhile both change and loss are extremely difficult challenges to face separately they often go hand in hand creating great emotional distress The way people react to constant loss and change shows a lot about their characters Some people are so accustomed to change that they automatically adapt without any real thought or difficulty Other people refuse to embrace it by harboring old feelings and habits which make it nearly impossible to continue with their lives Peoples reactions to loss and change are often results of the level of stability in their lives Throughout the novels Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain both of the main characters Huck and Ruth are subject to constant change While Ruths issues with abandonment prohibit her from adapting to her changing circumstances Hucks self-reliant personality helps him avoid the sadness of loss Both of these reactions are the result of Huck and Ruths loss of emotional connectionsAll throughout Ruths childhood her mother is emotionally detached however when she passes away there is a part of Ruth that dies too Even though she is not a suitable mother Ruth will always have that special mother-daughter connection with her By committing suicide it is a direct rejection of Ruth and Lucille and while Lucille is eventually able to continue on with her life Ruth is constantly haunted by the fact that her mother abandoned her In order to cope with the loss of her mother Ruth creates many womanly figures that represent her mother While just seeing a motherly figure temporarily satisfies Ruths sadness it makes it extremely hard for Ruth to move on with her life For example one day when Ruth and Lucille are walking next to the train they see A young woman with a small head and a small hat and brightly painted face the woman looked at the window very often clearly absorbed by what she saw
