Among all the greeting cards available at Wal-Mart there was not a single one involving stepfamily members At first one would be blinded by the infinite number of cards related to birthdays anniversaries and especially Christmas since it is the Holiday Season However cards were directed towards linear family members Even though most cards were related to typical greetings there were some sub-categories that were quite unique For example some birthday cards were for grandchildren or godchildren Also there were an unusually large section of cards that dealt with inspirational themes such as encouragement and admiration cards Of course there was the humorous section but on the other side there were cards related to sympathy and mourning Love and relationships was another common theme covering everything from what would be appropriate for a first date a secret admirer or someones life-long soul mate Since there were no cards directed towards stepfamily members one would probably be curious as to why not In analyzing the reason it seems pointless to give a card which has a stepfamily member label on it It is already hard enough for family members to deal with the incorporation of new family members For example children usually have a hard time adjusting to a new lifestyle with a stepparent It is something new and usually resentment or animosity is involved On the other hand the stepparent feels uncomfortable about taking over a new role in the childs life and would never want to jeopardize the small relationship that exists by so formally labeling the term stepson on a greetings card So ultimately neither party would give a card if this resentment exists Why would either party wish to push the issue even farther by buying a stepfamily member a greetings card when there is this uncomfortability However if this uncomfortability is absent the adaptation of the stepfamily member is loving and wholesome there would be no need to address the
