Wallace Bacon a recipient of an honorary doctorate from Emerson College in 1975 wrote that the liberal arts or humanities are concerned with the question of what makes life worth living And that question concerns not simply oneself but others The humanities must help us learn who we are they must help us learn the otherness of othersIn this light describe an encounter with someone or something different-an other which revealed to you your sense of self and your relationship to humanity This encounter may involve a person place culture or text book speech film play etcIn early 2011 I was given the opportunity to travel to China in the summer of 2012 for three weeks I thought it would be a fun educational experience but it was much more than that In those three weeks I achieved more personal growth than I have over the course of my high school career I owe this growth to the two others I encountered my delegation and the Chinese cultureBefore traveling to China I attended monthly meetings with my delegation During these meetings we learned a little about the Chinese culture and rules we needed to follow during travel and when we arrived Although the information we received during those meetings was important the most important aspect of these meetings was to get to know the other delegatesAfter about three meetings cliques started to form Cliques are always based on what its members have in common and the cliques in my delegation were no different It was ironic that while in North Carolina at our meetings we came together based on our similarities but once we were placed in a culture where everyone was different from us our differences also became clearer Throughout the trip I found many people jumping from clique to clique trying to find someone similar to themselves because they just didnt seem to click with anyone Only now I realize that this happened
