confucism in canada Canada is considered a part of the modern western civilization A western civilization which for the most part promotes individualism lack of ancestral worship and a governing body which has little to no direct contact with its people Many of the elements which could help Canada improve as a country can be found in the religion of Confucianism and Taoism Confucianism emphasizes the importance of the collective people over the individual and stresses education as a means of improving oneself Taoism which utilizes several elements to show how life is determined through its interaction with nature and showing how several components complement each other rather than oppose each other These beliefs if applied properly could aid Canada in profound ways Canada is a society that focuses more on the individual than on the community as a whole The major problem with this ideal is the fact that Canadian society is materialistic and has a high poverty and homelessness rate The Confucian ideal of humanity as centred around human relationships rather than individualists would help Our society should be viewed as one big family a family that is dependant on each other to survive The effort has to be made by the individual to perform selfless tasks to improve the lives of those around them Ancestral worship is another key element in Taoism and Confucianism Often in Canada senior citizens are neglected even though they are experienced and can teach many valuable life lessons The Taoist idea of the yin and the yang can also be applied in Canadian society Many Canadians fail to appreciate the beauty of their countries landscape Canadians prefer to take the direct approach to life which can often lead to stress and tension within society Realizing that for every positive element there is a negative element could help Canadians deal with many difficult situations Another
