COLOR TELEVISION DEVELOPMENT AND INTRODUCTION On July 11 1949 the Federal Communications Commission called for hearings to determine the feasibility of introducing color service Hearings began on September 26 1949 and lasted until May 26 1950 with 10000 pages of testimony and 265 exhibits submitted for the record Three competing methods of color were proposed the Field Sequential method by CBS the Dot Sequential approach of RCA and the Line Sequential proposed by Color Television Incorporated The CBS field sequential color system failed because no standard monochrome receiver could present an intelligible picture during the color telecasts Historians mostly gave all credit for developing color television system to RCA Ironically the first RCA Dot-Sequential Color System was evaluated by the FCC as not acceptable However RCA did develop the total set of integrated hardware elements including studio transmission and receiver equipment for a complete color television system and they almost single handily continued to fund the development and marketing of color television for more than ten years until its acceptance Kukla Fran and Ollie Show was the first show using the RCA Dot -Sequential Color System cameras that went to the NBC network from the Washington DC studio On October 16 1951 RCA exhibited a color TV receiver-projector that provided color pictures on a 9 x 12-foot theater screen at the Colonial Theater New York NBC was the first to broadcast a color signal after approval by the FCC of the RCA-pioneered standards for compatible color On February 16 1954 NBC transmitted the first newscast in color including the first integration of 16-mm color film into a live program Following that came the first sporting event shows and the first two-hour production of Macbeth all in color in 1954 Afterwards many shows and events begin to emerge in color including the first World Series game in color The first receiver by RCA named Model 1 was produced by April 1950 It is
