Cannery Row is about a neighborhood in MontereyBay California during the aftermath of thedepression The neighborhood is built around asardine company but the main characters dont havemuch dealing with the workers there Theneighborhood consists of a general store owned byLee Chong a whore house called Bear FlagRestaurant owned by Dora a group of bums thatlive in the Palace Flophouse and Docs LaboratoryIt narrates their experiences and how they surviveJohn Steinbeck shows this era of the depressionin a positive perspective rather than a negativeone like it was frequently perceived He shows thehumor in all situations and veers away frompessimism Steinbeck showed peoples place insociety how they depended on one another and theexuberance of a community He also let the readersee the loneliness of an individual and theirThe storys setting had a huge relevance toJohn Steinbecks life He grew up in Monterey BayCalifornia during the depression Although thecharacters in the book are fictional theirpersonalities are based off of real life peoplethat Steinbeck encountered The book was writtenafter the depression so it is more of a realisticapproach to the actual life of people in that timeThe over all conflict was peoples survivalduring the depression It had many minor conflictsas well One was when Mack and the boys threw aparty for Doc and it all went wrong Another oneThe book had a resolutionsomewhat It endedwhen Doc finally got a party and nothing wentwrong The thing is that Doc ended up throwingthe party for himself so everything ended up likeit was before and how it had always been Doc hadhelped everyone in the community as usual Itleaves the reader with the impression that thingswill go on and everyone and everything will be allCannery Row was published in 1945 and has livedon for over 50 years The themes represented bythis book have relevance to todays society andprobably will have pertinence to the world in lateryears The author John Steinbeck won the NobelPrize for Literature because of this novel Thebook was appropriate
