Tattoos Tattooing has been around for a very long time Most people associate them with indians and their tribal ink or dirty parlors containing sailors and bikers However tattoos began long before this When scientists found the ice man the oldest man ever found intact he had tattoos There were also Egyptians who were dicovered to have been excellent tattooists It was usually only the rich and powerful who had tattoos During the years of the Roman empire tattooing was almost wiped off of the earth The only people with tattoos were barbarians and it was considered an offense punishable by death Romans believed the body should remain pure therefore no tattoos When the Roman soldiers would go out and fight they would encounter many tattooed barbarians Eventually the Roman soldiers themselves re-introduced tattoos to the mainstream Christianity soon came along and had to remain underground because of Roman intolerance Christians tattooed crosses on their forearm s to secretly show their faith and to be recognized by other christians People caught with this tattoo were immediately sentenced to death In the past tattoos have always been a way for the individual to set himself apart from society But times have changed Exit the drunken sailor lovesick adolescent and occasional Pharaoh There is a new gang of marked men and women in tattoo parlor lore evangelical Christians More than a millennium after church authorities condemned tattooing as a form of deviltry that disfigures the body evangelical youth are permanently altering their bodies with images of crosses sacred hearts and angels From the modern skin art of Finest Lines in Wickliffe Ohio to joints like Sids Tattoo Parlor in Santa Ana California where all four artists are conservative Christians Generation Xers are transforming a cultural fad into distinctive statements of faith Already religious scholars are taking notice For a small but growing subcultur e within evangelical Christianity religious tattooing is becoming an increasingly
