The English and Spanish alike of ten built sttlement near the ocean or riverbanks Colonist first built ades for protection early in the life of colny Stockades were slight protection made from logs that were sharpened at the top with gunner holes Stockades protected the housestores and gardens inside the colonies Stock ades in some sttlements were walls made from logs and mud mixed with straw The lumber for stockades was in saw pits I further protection was needed Forts were then built stockades with metal brasses Artillery was installedd to protect exposeed approaches Defensive planning was needed for a well built fort Forts built near the coast near the coast could attack ships If even more protection was needed then fortress took their place These were stout barricaded made from wood and stone masonry Embrases housed artillery which was more often used Artillery often over lapped other fields of fire Fortresses could also attack enemy ships more effectively With out weapons forts and fortresses would only last a short time Muskets were the most used weapon in colonial time Soldiers carried the muskets out to battlefield Dragoons also were swift soldiers on horses with muskets Spain held sea powers for many years with the finest ships Frigates were vary powerfull at sinking and destroying enemy ships The Galleons were a popular ship to use with amny cargo room it was a great trade ship The caravels used to explore the new worlds for colonist
