Bridget's feedback:
"You've crafted an essay that really engages with the novel and Crane's goals. The use of sources allows you to productively explore context to ground the analysis, though I feel the focus on Crane's being "the first" undercuts the discussion. While I do see the Peden quotation that backs up this claim, you would need to widen the critical conversation for a discussion oriented around superlative, as well as widen the paper's scope to addressing the movement in America and other writers. Based on the current text, I think the project demands the more focused exploration of Crane and his book as an important moment in the genre rather than the origin story, as it were. (I wonder, too, if the better angle for this is to be found in American naturalism.)
In terms of the presentation, my first observation is that formatting issues (or lack of formatting) make it hard to figure out what is a block quote and when your own text resumes. Combined with the dense paragraphs and single spacing, the readability is pretty bumpy. Bring your document into alignment with your style guide to fix this. Proofreading and taking advantage of opportunities to revise and streamline phrasing and syntax will further enhance the reader's experience with your ideas."
