Native Peoples are synonymous with Canada They inhabited this great nation when Christopher Columbus landed in North America in 1492 and even when the Vikings visited it centuries earlier They are as much a part of this country as the trees that grow in our forests and the water that runs through our rivers They are a vital to this country as the soil that we all walk on Their way of life is in many ways vastly superior to our own and yet the mainstream culture of Canada has learned very little from out Native brethren When white settlers first arrived here so many years ago they were amazed at what they saw Native culture was thriving in a way that white Europeans had never seen before They had music rituals and modes or trade that were completely different from anything theyd ever seen before But instead of learning from the Native Peoples the white man took over what was once the Natives land Native peoples did not have a form of currency Everything they want they either made themselves or traded with other members of the community in a detailed and elaborate barter system If person a had a chicken and person b had a cow they would trade each other so that both would gain something from the transaction This form of trade seemed barbaric to the Europeans who had relied on currency to get goods and services and had since before greedy because of it Did the white man respect the ways that the Native Peoples did business No he did not He removed the system and taught the Natives how to use money and that was the end of the system the Natives had known their whole existence The Native Peoples that initially inhabited Canada were at one with the environment around them They would only use what they needed so that they would not knock nature out of its
