The Country The Federal Republic of Germany is made up of 16 states known as Lander They are Baden Wettemberg Bavaria Brandenburg Hesse Lower Saxony Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania North Rhine-Westphalia Rhineland-Palatinate Saarland Saxony Saxony-Anhalt Schlewwig-Holsten Thuringia Berlin Bremen and Hamburg Each of which has a constitution that must be consistent with the republican democratic and social principles embodied in the German Constitution After the Napoleonic wars the Austro-Prussian War and both World Wars Germany was divided and the largest state which is Prussia dissolved Most of the states were established after 1945 and they kept their ethnic traditions and characteristics and some of the old boundaries Federal Republic of Germany consisted of eleven states until it was reunited in 1990 These eleven states were developed in the western zones and had democratic constitutions between 1946-1957 The Soviet zone became the German Democratic Republic which formed five states These were later replaced by a centralized administration The first free German Democratic Republic election took place on March 18 1990 Five new states were created with boundaries that conformed to those of the period prior to 1952 On October 3 1990 the German Democratic Republic which included Brandenburg Meclenburg-Western Pomerania Saxony Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia complied with the Federal Public of Germany and Berlin united with West Berlin The Federal Republic of Germany can be found in the heart of Europe Denmark the Netherlands Belgium Luxembourg France Switzerland Austria the Czech Republic and Poland surround it Germany serves as a link between the East and West and Scandinavia and the Mediterranean Germany has an area of about 357000 Sq kilometers The landscape of Germany consists of low and high mountain ranges upland plains terrace country hilly regions lank lands and open lowlands Germany is divided into five regions These regions have different topographical features as followed The North German Plain the Central Upland Range the terrace panorama of the southwest the Alpine foothills in
