The Better Interpreter Since Shakespeare there have been two major movie interperetations of Romeo and Juliet one which was made in the 60s and the other in the 90s The first movie was directed by Zeffirelli and the modern was directed by Lurhmann In my opinion Zeffirelli did a better job then Lurhmann with the stage directions they fight because first of all it was set in the same time and place which makes it easier to understand because Lurhmanns version is good but some of the lines dont make sense because of the time like when the opening scene takes place Benvolio says draw your swords which isnt wright because everyone has guns Also I think Shakespeare didnt want to make people think Tybalt purposefully killed Mercutio So I liked how Zeffirelli made the first fight scene comical for example Tybalt ends up grabbing Mercutios hair at one point but Tybalt doesnt kill him he cuts his hair insted also Tybalt had the perfect oppurtunity to slit Mercutios throat instead Mercutio starts whistleing and makes everyone laugh and runs behind Tybalt but Romeo tries to stop the fight and grabs Mercutio and in the confusion Tybalts sword accidently stabs Mercutio in the side of his chest The second fight scene niether Lurhmann nor Zeffirelli got right because in the play after Mercutio gets killed Tybalt leaves and then comes back well in both movies Romeo pursues Tybalt Both directers wanted this fight to be serious and suspenseful in the modern version Romeo and Tybalt are playing chicken and they both crash as they crash a gun flies out of Tybalts car Romeo runs
